One of our many ongoing projects at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the design of two green roofs
flanking the D‐E Connector building on the north and south. The intent of this project is to use the installation of
the green roofs to promote PHL’s Sustainability Program Initiatives through runoff reduction, storm water
retention, energy conservation, and reduction of heat island effects.
Work includes removal of the existing roof assemblies, relocation of existing roof level vent stacks, installation
of electrical connections for lighting, installation of plumbing services, and reinforcing the existing structure to
support the overburden associated with green roof installation. Landscaping selections have been carefully
considered to address various factors, chief among them longevity/ durability of plantings, seasonal changes,
daylight levels, and maintenance.
